چکیده
Direct thrust measurements by means of a balance (TB) are the golden standard for measuring and, concurrently, specific impulse in electric thrusters. To measure these properties novel class electrodeless plasma thrusters, new TB based on Variable Amplitude Hanging Pendulum with Extended Range (VAHPER) concept has been developed. The mechanical amplification mechanism an angular magnification 31°/°.. Using Lagrangian mechanics, we show that loaded 5.2-kg thruster prototype behaves like damped harmonic oscillator natural frequency 0.37 Hz. A variable damping system provides optimal ratio 0.78, which corresponds to settling time only 1.8 s. Both model and calibration have validated. accommodate particularities medium power design includes following features: optical displacement sensor, water cooling, liquid metal connectors, dedicated vacuum-rated electronics autoleveling, remote (in-vacuum) calibration, temperature monitoring. test TB, were performed 500-W Helicon Plasma Thruster breadboard model. When this thruster, measured stiffness was 12.67 ± 0.01 mN/mm. For stiffness, range is 150 mN 0.1-mN resolution. relative uncertainty found be order 2%.

An Inverted-Pendulum Thrust Stand for High-Power Electric Thrusters∗
The inverted-pendulum method of thrust measurement for high-power electric thrusters is described analytically and experimentally. Two sources of uncertainty in the thrust measurements are investigated: those due to changes in the sensitivity of the inverted pendulum and those due to tare forces resulting from thermal stresses and electromagnetic forces acting on the flexural elements. An ideal...
متن کاملThrust stand for vertically oriented electric propulsion performance evaluation.
A variation of a hanging pendulum thrust stand capable of measuring the performance of an electric thruster operating in the vertical orientation is presented. The vertical orientation of the thruster dictates that the thruster must be horizontally offset from the pendulum pivot arm, necessitating the use of a counterweight system to provide a neutrally stable system. Motion of the pendulum arm...
متن کاملComparing Direct and Indirect Thrust Measurements from Passively Fed and Highly Ionic Electrospray Thrusters
Highly ionic beams of several hundred μA per cm 2 have been measured from porous glass ionic liquid electrospray sources fabricated using a conventional mill. The thrust output from three prototype devices, two emitting the ionic liquid EMI-Im and one emitting EMI-BF 4, was measured directly using a precise balance. Thrusts up to 50 μN were measured when emitting EMI-Im in a bipolar, alternatin...
متن کاملThrust Control Of An Electric Propulsion Space Vehicle With Minimal Fuel Consumption
The objective of this research is to develop a heuristic process to obtain a near optimal control strategy for an electric-propulsion spacecraft. The work reported here in particular uses a genetic algorithm (GA) to develop a control profile for an ionic thruster for a spacecraft such as the Jupiter Icy Moons Orbiter (JIMO), although the methodology could be used for any deep-space mission usin...
متن کاملNon-contact thrust stand calibration method for repetitively pulsed electric thrusters.
A thrust stand calibration technique for use in testing repetitively pulsed electric thrusters for in-space propulsion has been developed and tested using a modified hanging pendulum thrust stand. In the implementation of this technique, current pulses are applied to a solenoid to produce a pulsed magnetic field that acts against a permanent magnet mounted to the thrust stand pendulum arm. The ...
